With labor and delivery units closing in rural areas in the United States, a pregnant person may travel more than an hour, in labor, to deliver a baby. This scenario is increasingly common as maternity care deserts continue to expand. In this issue, Dr Alison Huffstetler takes a closer look at the problem of shrinking access to perinatal care in these areas, and how family medicine can be part of the solution.
