Return to Issue

Intern year

“The first cross-cover”
Colleagues eye my screen
Watching me do med recs is
Watching wet paint dry

“Behind the scenes”
The COVID unit
Masks, gown, gloves, shield, it’s quiet
We speak heavy words

Second year

“The second first cross-cover”
Fear, ever present
Looking around, side to side
I’m the senior here?

“On-call”
Buzz beep ring barrage
Wearing two phones, pager, cell
I long for the woods

Third year

“Post-pandemic woes”
First time, it’s masks off
My longtime patient asks me,
“Where’s my normal doc?”

“Kansas appreciation”
Unobstructed skies
Make golden sunsets, clear stars
Hey, I love it here
